What Is E-Design? A Complete Guide
If you've been looking into interior design services and keep coming across the term e-design, you're not alone in wondering what it actually means — and whether it's a real, full design service or a cut-down version of the real thing.
The short answer: e-design is a complete interior design service, delivered entirely remotely. No site visits. No in-person consultations. Just professional design thinking, applied to your space, delivered as a document you can act on straight away.
Here's exactly what it involves, how it works, and how to know whether it's right for you.
What e-design actually is
E-design — sometimes called online interior design or virtual interior design — is the process of working with a professional interior designer remotely. Instead of meeting in person, you share photographs and measurements of your space, have a video call, and receive a complete design concept as a PDF.
That concept document covers everything a traditional design service would: colour and material palette, furniture and lighting direction, layout guidance, sourcing recommendations, and the reasoning behind every decision.
The difference is not in the depth of thinking. It's in the delivery.
E-design is not a compromise. It's a complete professional service delivered through a different channel.
How the process works
At Urvashi Patel Interiors, every e-design project follows the same five stages.
You complete a short questionnaire covering how you use the room, the light conditions, what's not working, and what you want to feel when you walk in.
You share photographs of the space from several angles, approximate room measurements, and any visual references that capture what you're drawn to.
We have a video call — usually around 45 to 60 minutes. I ask questions and listen carefully. This is the most important part of the process.
I develop the concept document — colour and material palette, furniture and lighting direction, placement guidance, sourcing recommendations, and a written rationale for every decision.
The completed document is delivered within ten working days of the call. One revision round is included as standard.
That's it. No site visits. No lengthy back-and-forth. A clear, professional design direction delivered to your inbox.
What you receive
The concept document is a professionally presented PDF covering:
Colour palette — specific paint references with rationale
Material palette — flooring, soft furnishings, and key surfaces
Furniture direction — style, scale, and placement guidance for each key piece
Lighting recommendations — ambient, task, and accent, with specific fixture suggestions
Written rationale — the reasoning behind every decision, so you understand not just what to do but why
For clients who want sourcing done for them, The Edit adds a full sourcing schedule — specific product recommendations with retailer links, dimensions, pricing, and one alternative per key piece.
Everything in the document is actionable. You can share it with a contractor, a furniture supplier, or a decorator. Or act on it yourself, at your own pace.
Who e-design is for
E-design works well for almost anyone who wants professional design direction without needing a designer physically present throughout the project.
It suits busy professionals who want the thinking done for them. Homeowners who are about to renovate and need clarity before they spend anything. Content creators who need their home to feel as considered as the content they create in it. Anyone who has a space that doesn't feel quite right and can't work out why.
Because everything is done remotely, location is not a barrier. I work with clients throughout the UK and worldwide.
What e-design doesn't cover
Honesty matters here. E-design is a concept service. It doesn't include contractor management, site visits during a build, or physical sample selection in the room. If you need a designer to manage a full renovation from start to finish, e-design is not the right service for that stage.
But for the design thinking — the hard part, the part most people struggle with — remote works beautifully.
How much does e-design cost?
At Urvashi Patel Interiors, e-design services start from £495 for a single room concept. Kitchen and bathroom concepts start from £695. The Whole House E-Design service — covering every room in the home with a full sourcing schedule included — is £2,500.
All services are fixed price with no hidden extras. A full payment is taken at project commencement as delivery is not in phases.
The question isn't whether e-design is worth it. It's whether living in a space that doesn't feel right is worth the alternative.
Is e-design right for you?
If you have a space that doesn't feel finished, a home you've been meaning to sort for years, or a renovation coming up and no clear sense of direction — e-design is almost certainly the right fit.
If you're not sure, the simplest thing to do is get in touch. A short conversation is usually enough to know whether it makes sense.
